Advantages Of Underfloor Heating Systems

Underfloor heating provides many advantages. It can be sectioned off into zones so that each zone can have its own individual thermostat. Each zone can be temperature controlled individually so that energy is not being wasted heating an area that is not used.

Underfloor Heating Systems Keep Rooms Warm And Dry

Floors in areas that tend to get wet will dry faster because the heat is directly under the floor preventing safety issues due to slipping and preventing mold and mildew from forming.

People who suffer from allergies will benefit from not having air from ducts circulating pollutants throughout the home. If work in one room of a home creates dust, the dust can be pumped throughout the home with forced air heat but underfloor heat doesn’t rely on the circulation of air.

Quiet Heat

Underfloor systems are very quiet because air is not blown from a register. No flow of air is required so that the placement of furniture won’t block heat registers or cold air return ducts.

With forced air heat, a room may tend to have cold spots. Underfloor heat will warm the floor and thus any objects that are in contact with the floor, making the room and its contents feel warm and inviting.

The heat comes obviously from the floor and rises up creating warmth throughout the home. Compare this to other systems where forced air blows heat out and it flows up before coming down as significantly colder air leaving the upper body and head nice and warm while the feet are freezing cold.

Downsides

Underfloor heating does however, have its disadvantages. Dressers, bureaus or cabinets should not be placed over heated floors. Heat can cause these items to sweat, leading to condensation and that can develop into a moisture problem which in turn can lead to mold and mildew problems.

In a kitchen or bathroom this isn’t a big issue because the base cabinets are typically fixed in place. Care should be taken when moving around dressers, bureaus or any other type of furniture used to store things.

Some thicker carpets or carpet pads can absorb heat, diminishing the heating capability of the underfloor system.

Efficient Heat

Pipes in water based heating systems cannot be allowed to freeze. Freezing pipes can burst leading to untold repair costs due to water damage. Look into an emergency form of power, such as a generator, just in case the power goes out. Some homeowners have another source of heat like wood, coal, kerosene or some other type of fuel to keep the pipes warm in the event of a power outage.

Proven

Underfloor heating systems have been around in one form or another since around the Neolithic era. Early forms of underfloor heating heated the stones in the floors of underground homes and heated the home from the floor up.

This principle has evolved significantly over time but the idea has remained largely unchanged. The idea of running heat underneath the floor remains a highly efficient method of heating a structure.

Modern underfloor systems use either a water based system or a system of electrical coils run underneath the floor to produce heat.
